I stopped in for coffee and to do some work on the computer. The sign on the window says "Free WiFi Hotspot". Just like McDonalds, right? Not so much.

When I went to log on I was given 2 choices; pay-as-you-go or join some kind of club, so I ask the coffee shop girl "How much to join the club"? Answer: $25.

So I ask the obvious question "The sign says it's free. How is that free"? She says "It IS free if you join the club".

I can only assume every other transaction in this place will be just as dishonest.

Location: Louisville, Kentucky

Please! The signs clearly state that the wifi is free for club members.

Just like free 2 day shipping, free prime movies and music for Amazon prime members. It's said that you would berate employees and a company because you can't read...and no, I have no affiliation with BAM. I am a club member and have been for years.

I get great discounts for online orders and expedited shipping among the more modest in-store deals. Find something else to complain about!

This just recently changed at my books a million. I had always been able to get on the wifi by linking it to my Twitter account.

And now the past 2 times I haven't been able to do so because now I have to sign up for some ridiculous membership.

I come to this one regularly to write and know many of the employees here are wondeRful and kind people(besides 1 grouch), so please remember to not take it out on the poor workers who get paid *** money to enforce *** corporate rules. The same thing happens to me at my job.

I'm illiterate??? You're the one who thinks "free" means "if you pay for a membership".

Sign literally says Free WiFi for Books Million Club Members. Ironic an illiterate in bookstore.

Unfortunately, it's not illegal, at least under Florida law, to advertise something as "Free" as long as a subsequent condition, if there is one, is also stated on the sign. The law doesn't require that the "Free" wording and fine print qualifier be the same size either.

Most, if not all, states have the same pro-business law. Research (note the word "unconditionally"):

817.415 Florida Free Gift Advertising Law.

(4) RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF WORD "FREE." โ€” Any item or portion of an item unconditionally offered as โ€œfreeโ€ shall in fact be free, without obligation or requirement of consideration in any form, .

You throwing a tantrum right there bro? That's a lot of all caps no's. Need a bottle of milk?

The signs specifies its only free for members. Its fine print, so be annoyed about that.

Don't hassle the 9-5 associates who have nothing to do with their company being misleading.

Also, you are complaining about misreading a sign at a BOOK store, where the only prerequisite for shopping there is knowing how to read. You're complaint is no one else's fault but your own.

Agreed. Like a sign stating "Welcome Club Members! Free Wifi awaits you."

Guest

That would irk me. The sign should state in clear lettering, Free upon joining the paid membership club.

I do understand why they would charge something, but they should be more upfront about it. I have seen other complaints around the web about the claim of free wifi, when in fact you have to either pay $5/day or join the club.
